What Wordpress plugins or themes are not recommended?

The Wordpress repository contains a huge number of plugins and themes, while commercial software developers provide many more. With the large number of options available it can be difficult to ensure the software you're using is safe and doesn't cause conflicts or problems with other software or our hosting environment.

Though we do actively monitor for unusual or malicious activity, it's important to understand which plugins and themes may cause problems and how to minimise those risks:

  1. Always keep themes, plugins and Wordpress core updated - the number one cause of security and compatibility issues is out-of-date software. This means making sure all licencing for third-party software is up-to-date and enable auto-updates wherever possible.
  2. Whenever possible use, actively updated, well reviewed software from the official Wordpress repository - avoid out-dated software or from software from un-trusted sources. Obviously, illegal or stolen software is unsafe and is strictly prohibited under our terms of service.
  3. Deactivate and remove any plugins, themes or software you don't need - unused software takes additional work to update and even when inactive may become unsafe.
  4. Avoid software which is unnecessary, inefficient or provides features which may cause security risks - for example, backup, database and file management plugins (features available already through your customer account).
